Geek Chic Maternity: Pinup Girl Clothing Unbagging & Review

You may or may not be familiar with Pinup Girl Clothing or their brick and mortar counterpart, Pinup Girl Boutique. These shops feature original designs based off of vintage styles and also carry outside brands that fit their aesthetic. These brands are well loved for their inclusivity of all sizes and shapes of women and while they are brought up often at our convention panels when we talk about cute plus size or curvy options you may not think of Pinup Girl Clothing when you think of maternity. They surprisingly carry a couple of Maternity styles and are also carving out a section of their website including styles that are Maternity friendly. Here I try 3 of the “Maternity Friendly” styles.

The Kayla Monster Dress from Pinup Girl Clothing
This dress has ruching around the bust and 2 waist seams. I found the bust cinching to be very flattering however, the waist seems are a little uncomfortable on my constantly growing belly. I really love this look – the classic monster pattern is super cute. The fabric is very stretchy and I definitely foresee being able to wear this dress when my belly returns to it’s normal shape (hopefully). Because I have a big belly right now the front is a tad bit shorter than the back, but I find that I didn’t mind this too much. I think I would be much happier if I was wearing this earlier on in my pregnancy but as I’m well into the 3rd trimester I’m feeling a lot of my clothes (even maternity clothes) are starting to fit pretty snug.

The Elizabeth Dress in Moth Print from Pinup Girl Clothing
I am typically not a wiggle dress kinda girl – but I respectfully adore all the women that pull this look off… I wanted to try out a wiggle dress because while I’m pregnant I feel a little bit more comfortable showing off all my curves and lumps and bumps and humps… and this dress surprisingly does a really nice job of camouflaging some of those lumps. I love the color and the print and while I may still feel as big as a house (I have to remember I am currently a tiny person’s home… so, being a house is not such a bad thing…) I need to embrace this time of being HUGE! The material is super stretchy and comfortable, and the high neck and longer (short) sleeve length adds a really flattering touch. The high collar is really my favorite part of this dress, it’s so elegant I can wear this to a red carpet event and still be comfy and feel chic. If the moth / butterfly print is not for you they make this dress in several other gorgeous colors and prints.

The Hannah Swing Dress in Cthulu Print from Pinup Girl Clothing
This dress I assumed would fit extremely similarly to the Kayla dress since they are made of the same material and have a similar shape – however I was super surprised by the fit – this actually fit me the best out of the 3… however, the waist seam I think is supposed to be worn way lower than where I chose to wear it. I wore the waist seam empire style under my boobs – I found this comfortable and also thought kinda gave it a 90’s vibe and I paired it with black leggings and dr. martens (which totally made me dance around and stomp things… but not too much since twirling makes me super dizzy and I’m not supposed to jump around too much with this big ol’ belly). I love this adorable Cthulu / Necronomicon / HP Lovecraft print… it’s so fun and I hope to get a ton of post baby wear out of it also. This dress does come with a thick black belt but there was absolutely no way that belt could come anywhere near this belly — maybe I could have worn it on my head or as jewelry or something but belt’s and my preggo belly are not friends at all…

Overall thoughts:
I was pleasantly pleased with the fit of all of these dresses especially since I chose dresses with waist or bust seams purposefully to see how they would fare against my pregnancy body. I love all the prints and styles Pinup Girl Clothing offers… all of these were definitely Fashionably Nerdy and items I can see wearing beyond pregnancy. It just makes perfect sense to buy things for your pregnant body that you can get use out of after, right? That being said I think with all these seams nursing in these dresses would be some sort of feat of strength and ability that I probably do not (currently) possess. But color me super impressed that all these dresses fit and looked pretty darn cute on a super pregnant lady!
Also I was really impressed with the staff both in store and online – they were all very kind and helpful and I had such a wonderful experience interacting with them all! I had a chance to visit the Burbank, CA boutique recently and it was as always a lovely experience (and it never hurts that they are located next to Porto’s Cuban Bakery which has the most amazing yummy’s — try the chicken croquette’s and the caramel eclair if you are ever there… those are my 2 favorites).
